Councillors from Henllys Community Council tonight decided to give away their annual allowance to charities and local groups.
Each year community councillors in Wales are entitled to a single payment of £150. This amount is set by the Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales and helps to cover the costs and expenses of being a community councillor.
Five out of the six community councillors for Henllys were at this evening’s meeting and they agreed to combine their individual payments plus the extra allowance for the chair and vice-chair. The total of £1,500 meant that each councillor could choose where £250 would be donated.
The councillors and who they chose to support:
- Cllr Colette Thomas- Henllys Pipes and Drums Band
- Cllr Brenda Everett- Women’s Aid in Torfaen
- Cllr Jonathan Lewis- Verus Arthritis
- Cllr Lawrence Smith-Higgins- Kidney Cancer UK
- Cllr Valerie Waters- The food bank at Fairwater Shops
- Cllr Ron Burnett- He was not at the meeting but will be asked to name his charity.
2023/24 allowances
Adrian Isaacs, the clerk of the council, told councillors that the Independent Remuneration
Panel for Wales had published its annual report for 2023/24. During that year the annual payment will rise to £156 and an extra £52 can be paid for consumables (paper, printer ink etc).
