Cwmbran Community Councillors met tonight and discussed their plans for the Cwmbran Big Event 2023.
The popular summer event used to be organised by Torfaen Council but it was passed to the community council several years ago.
Councillors were told that the new council clerk starts next week and will be the lead organiser. A safety co-ordinator has been appointed and they are talking to a couple of organisations to manage stall holders.
Quotes have been recieved for the stage and fencing. They heard that the fencing quotes have come in “cheaper” than last year.
Cllr Lyndon Chaney, Greenmeadow Ward, said that some local residents complained last year about cars being parked on or near their drives and it “caused a bit of consternation.” He asked for more bins to be provided to vendors to reduce the clearing up time for the organisers.
Cllr Anthony Bird, Northville Ward, replied that more stewards would be asked to patrol the local roads and regarding the bins he said: “We get what Torfaen give us but we can ask for more than we had last year.”
Cllr Stuart Ashley, Mount Pleasant Ward, said he was “joking” about his suggestion that traffic lights are used to control people walking across the Afon Lwyd footbridge but “we do need some sort of control mechanisms.”
Cllr Bird said they had recieved quotes for ten stewards but will ask for “extra” so they could patrol the roads and help manage people crossing the bridge.
Cllr Ashley said that boating lake site was “extremely accessible” by bus so more could be done to publicise the X24 route that passes it every ten minutes.
Cllr Leanne Lloyd-Tolman, Upper Cwmbran Thornhill Ward, asked if Meritor Cwmbran and other “local factories” could be asked their car parks could be used during the event. This would be one of the tasks given to the new council clerk to follow up.
When is the Cwmbran Big Event 2023?
It is taking place on Saturday 10 June 2023.
