People can now give their views on a proposal to build a 3G pitch on a grass field in Llantarnam.
The site is the former Llantarnam Comprehensive School playing fields. Last September, councillors voted for plans for the 3G pitch to be put together and submitted as a planning application for the ‘installation of a new 3G sports pitch with associated car parking at Llantarnam’.
Now views are being sought as part of the pre-planning process. The deadline for comments is 4 July 2023.
Cwmbran Life has followed the story since last Summer. Stories have led to a lively readers’ debate with comments from those in favour saying there is a lack of all-weather pitches in Torfaen and how a 3G pitch will encourage more people to play sport. Views against the proposal included residents worried about a large section of the free-to-use grass field being lost to only those who can pay and the increase in traffic along James Prosser Way.

The consultants running the consultation have set up this website page packed with all the documents about the proposals. It includes reports on a white-crayfish survey in Dowlais Brook and a traffic assessment.
Forty-four car parking spaces are in the plan. This includes spaces for four disabled cars and four electric cars. Two coach bays are included, but when they are used it will reduce the number of available car parking spaces.
‘Worst case scenarios’ of 46 cars during an evening session and 51 cars on the weekend are estimated but those figures make ‘no allowance for people walking, cycling, travelling by bus to the site or car-sharing’.
