A 36-year-old Pontypool man achieved a C grade in GCSE English and is encouraging other adults to think about studying.

Since gaining his qualification last year Alex Madden, has started a free Essential Skills Maths class at the Settlement in Pontypool and hopes to study theology in the future.

He took his course through Torfaen Adult Community Learning.

Alex said: “I didn’t achieve in school and have battled with mental health and addiction since I was a teenager.

“It was a long time coming, but having achieved a GCSE in English, it was great to finally see my hard work pay off.

“I’ve never been confident with numbers, but I’m ready for the maths challenge ahead. For two hours a week, my plan is to work my way through my basic skills until I’m ready to take the plunge for the full GCSE qualification.”

If it has been several years since you last studied maths, English, or other subjects, Torfaen Adult Community Learning offers a variety of free starter courses to help you brush away the cobwebs and improve your skills in a non-pressurised environment.

Every year hundreds of learners sign up to courses with Torfaen Adult Community Learning, with many using the service as a springboard to go on to bigger and better things.

Councillor Joanne Gauden, Torfaen executive member for economy, Skills and Regeneration, said: “The decision to return to learning can be a big step but can help you achieve your personal goals, whether that’s going to university, applying for a higher paying job, or helping your children with their homework.

“Like Alex, the more you practice, the more confident you’ll become, and in time, you could learn to unlock your inner maths genius!”.
