Were you part of the Newport rock/punk/alt scene between 1970 and 2010?

Perhaps you saw your favourite band debut in LePub, or maybe you met your musical hero at the Kensington Club?

If so, Newport Rock Collecting – Winding Snake’s brand new social history project, funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund – needs YOU!

They are looking for people who were going to gigs in Newport in the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s to take part in the project and share their stories and experiences.

Working with Oliver Blackmore, the Collections and Engagement Officer at Newport Museum & Art Gallery they are building a collection of Newport’s rock past, featuring a collection of music memorabilia, featuring anything from ticket stubs, setlists, band t-shirts, fanzines, to costumes and instruments.

They want gig goers to share the treasures of their memory boxes with the world.

“Many of us remember an amazing gig, bobbing up and down with friends, clutching a can of beer, as your feet stuck to a tacky nightclub carpet. After you’d shouted yourself hoarse at the band for an encore, you spilled out into the night with your ears ringing. I vividly remember those nights – the youth, the energy, the excitement. Rock Collecting’ will capture some of those moments, helping them endure the test of time. Imagine someone in 200 years’ time looking at your faded band t-shirt and ticket stub from a night out at TJ’s, Le Pub or the Kensington Club and smiling.”
