Dozens of children had fun today creating a huge piece of chalk art in Oakfield Flower Gardens.

They took part in an Art in the Park event, organised by Llarcs (Llantarnam Residents Conservation Society). Artist Tom Maloney encouraged children to draw bugs and insects in chalk along one of the long paths through the park. This is a quick video of the path after the first session, before the second group made it even longer in the afternoon. It’s a stunning, colourful stretch of creative art made by children.

The local Community Support Officers, CSO Read and CSO Seedat came along and took part.

Following the chalk art, Tom gave the groups clay and sticks and they created animals including owls, hedgehogs and squirrels. Their art has been placed on trees in the park. Look out for them on your next visit.

Stacey Lewis, from Llarcs, said: “Llarcs Community Group organised an ‘Art in The Park’ family-friendly event today at Oakfield Flower Gardens in celebration of The Great Big Green Week. Local Buglife artist Tom Maloney led some fantastic chalk-drawing and clay animal-making to celebrate our love of bugs and all nature. Over 100 members of our community attended and thoroughly enjoyed all the activities and the kids all showcased amazing bug-hunting skills.

“Many thanks to artist Tom Maloney, all our wonderful volunteers and all the attendees for their enthusiasm and support. We are a Llantarnam-based volunteer group who deliver nature-inspired events in the gardens and group litter-picks around Llantarnam along with maintaining areas of the gardens. Our aim is to create a cleaner, greener Llantarnam and engage our community in a love of nature! If you fancy getting involved in any of the above, please get in touch via our Facebook page @llarcs community group.

“Our next event is a collaboration with Bron Afon – Helping Working Families. It’s The Big Butterfly Picnic in the Park on Saturday 29 July from 2p-4pm. Keep a look out on @llarcs community group Facebook page for more info.”
