a playing field
A 3G pitch is proposed to be built on this field in Llantarnam

Plans have been submitted to build a floodlit 3G sports pitch and spectator stands in Cwmbran.

The site is the playing fields that were part of the former Llantarnam Comprehensive School before it was knocked down to build 226 homes on James Prosser Way.

Torfaen Council is behind the proposals using funding of around £1million received from housing developers to replace lost sporting facilities in the area.

Members of the public have until 30 April 2024 to make comments on the plan (scroll down for more information).

Cwmbran Life has covered the story since 2022 highlighting delays to the money being spent. Readers shared comments about the lack of all-weather facilities in Torfaen along with worries about extra traffic on James Prosser Way, and concerns that a large area of free-to-use grass would only be used by those who could pay.

The new plans include:

  • Two steel stand for spectators measuring 7m x 3.5m x 3.8m high
  • A 5m high mesh fence around the development with a 3m high net behind both ends to stop balls going over it.
  • Markings for a 90m x 62m football pitch and 96 x 62m rugby pitch
  • A copy of a white-clawed crayfish survey carried out on the Dowlais Brook that runs along the site. The survey was done in 2021 when the council was investigating repair work to be done to the two footbridges.
  • Floodlights.
  • Changing rooms.
  • 42 parking spaces- 34 spaces for cars, four disabled bays and four electric charging points.
  • Confirmation that the designs meet the standards for the Football Association of Wales and the Rugby Football Union.

The plans were passed to the council’s planning department on 23 March 2024.
