The re-opening of the putting green in Old Cwmbran has brought back lovely memories for residents. Volunteers from the St Dial’s Ward Community Group knew local people missed the attraction which closed around 15 years ago.

So last year they raised money at their Party in the Park event to go towards making their vision a reality. Today after a year of hard work and with the support of residents, businesses and organisations including Bron Afon, Party in the Park took place in the warm sunshine to celebrate the return of the putting green.

Disabled golf champion Mike Jones had the honour of officially opening the putting green.

The playing field was packed with attractions for families including:

A dog show

A wrestling show.

A huge inflatable slide.

Carrie School of Dance.

Torfaen Sea Cadets.

The Salvation Army.

The Incredible Hulk (yes, he made an appearance 🙂 )

When can I play on the putting green and how much does it cost?

It’s free 🙂 Volunteers are giving up their time to be on hand to share clubs and balls every Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm until 2 September. Children must be accompanied by an adult. It’s all thanks to the volunteers so scroll down to find out how to get involved. If there are more volunteers it could open on more days.

Where is the putting green in Old Cwmbran?

It’s just off Cocker Avenue/ Wesley Street.

Councillor Elizabeth Haynes, chair of St Dial’s Ward Community Group, said: “We have raised enough money through community events to buy the equipment and arrange for the grass to be cut each week on top of the council’s regular schedule. We plan to open on Sundays during the summer holidays but if it is successful we could potentially open it more often.

“To make this work we need people to support our community events, and anyone who wants to give some of their time to help us keep the putting green open is welcome.”

Councillor Fiona Cross, executive member for the environment at Torfaen council, said: “This is a fantastic example of local people stepping up to run a service for the good of their community.

“Unfortunately we don’t have the resources to run and maintain the putting green ourselves and I must commend the St Dials Ward Community Group for their hard work on this project that will make a real difference to children in the local area.”
