The family of Agnes Zennadi have shared her funeral details. The popular great-grandmother passed away aged 89 on 26 April in the Royal Gwent Hospital.

She was born in Scotland in 1932 and moved to the Byways estate in 1967 in Cwmbran after reading an article in The Sunday Times about Cwmbran New Town. For a few years she lived in Oaksford but soon returned to the Byways.

Adam, one of her 21 grandchildren, said: “She loved the Byways estate and everyone loved her. We are still bumping into people who don’t know she has passed away so we want to let as many people as possible know about her funeral. She first moved to The Courtlands in 1967 and worked behind the bar at Fairwater Social Club and the Maes-y-Rhiw Club for 32 years. Everyone knew her as ‘Aunty Aggie’. She loved playing bingo and would play in CoStar all the time and always sit in the same chair. A few years ago she lost her eyesight and had to stop playing.

“Her funeral at 1.30pm on Monday 23 May in Gwent Crematorium.” Mourners will go to Croesyceiliog Cricket and Rugby Club for the wake. All are welcome.

An article on the CoStar website told how she introduced children on the estate to egg rolling at easter: “They would hard boil eggs in tea, or food colouring, then draw faces and put their names on them and go up the mountain to roll them down the slopes. Whoever’s egg had the most shell still on at the end won. A local farmer didn’t see the funny side of this one Easter and chased Agnes, Hazel and the children off his land while they pretended they weren’t able to speak English! Agnes’ pushchair was so buckled after this that she could never use it again.”

She is survived by Charles, her husband, five children, 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
